Mending Monday

The mending/repair pile had gotten quite large in the sewing studio. I took a few days to begin the repairs. Most were not hard or time consuming just hand sewing or reworking items.

My DD had ripped a hole in the arm seam of a fleece pullover when taking it off one day. (I did not make the pullover, commercial purchase). The tear was right on the seam. I simply serged the seam again and now is back in the wearbale pile.

DD also had a white dress with a tie that she purchased somewhere. When I was taking it off the drying rack the other week I noticed the tie was beginning to pull out of the badly sewn waist commercial seam. I pushed it back in and hand sewed it back together.

The last item I “fixed” for her was a broken zipper on a thrifted pair of jeans. This is why I believe they were at the thrift store. This turned out to be one of the shortest and worst made zippers in the entire world. The zipper was missing teeth toward the bottom. I simply snipped where the missing teeth were, put the zipper teeth back into the pull and hand sewed a new zipper stop. I am not offering a guarantee on this repair job due to the quality of the zipper in the jeans.

My DH had a drawstring pull back into a pair of sleep shorts when they were washed. I pulled out the tie string, recut another drawstring and rethreaded. The sleep shorts are back in business.

The Don’t Be Salty hoodie I made needed a few adjustments. I wore it and realized I wanted the sleeve length shorter and they felt too wide. I simply cut off the cuffs I had added. Cut about 2 inches off of the length. Reserged the sleeve seams to bring in the seam allowance and then reattached the cuffs. Looks great.

The Farmhouse Chic skirt I sewed a few months ago had bad elastic. It unraveled within the waistband. I opened up a small portion of the waistband and repaired the elastic. Sewed everything back up and it is ready to wear.

This summer I was trying jogger pants patterns. It was finally cool enough the other day to wear long pant joggers. This is when I discovered the knit waistband I had attached seem to lack the ability to “spring back” into shape. I took a walk down to the mailbox the other day and almost lost my drawers!

I opened up the waistband and inserted elastic into the knit waistband. Sewed everything back up and now my pants stay up (or maybe that is just the Thanksgiving Feast holding the pants up LOL).

I still have a pair of pants to hem but that will wait until another day.
