Finding a Knitting Group
I usually am always knitting at various points in my day whenever I have a few spare minutes. It is nice to find a knitting group to hang out with to work on your craft. This is harder than it appears at least for me. I have 2 local yarn stores(LYS). One is new and does not yet have enough business or interest in beginning a knit group at the store. My other local LYS has been in business for quite a while and does have groups. I do not shop there. A few times I went into the shop and found it an unfriendly place. I saw one of the groups when I was there and they were not at all welcoming.
I tried joining the knitting group at my local recreation center this summer. Again I was the youngest member by about 25 years and the group was not very welcoming. The meeting time was Wednesdays mornings. This does not work when I am working. They also only do charity knitting. I do charity knitting too but I always have lots of other projects besides charity knits on my needles.
My church began a crafting group but it is once a month on Tuesdays from 4-6 pm. Not good if you work for a living. I get out of school in time to attend but I still have to fix dinner. 4-6 is prime dinner making time.
I finally did find a nice knitting group that meets at a coffee shop on Sunday late morning. The members are all around my age or even younger. This will be my knitting tribe for the foreseeable future.
I typically find this issue with all groups I would like to join. Organizations complain that no one younger will attend meetings. When I mention that it might be their meeting times that stop younger, working people from joining I am always meet with resistance. I am often told well that is our meeting time and if they are interested they should just adapt. The current members are usually retired and therefore can meet at any time. It is just my little soapbox. Please do not bemoan the lack of young people joining organizations if you make no effort to encourage them to join.
