Finished Object

Now don't get too excited - it is not a pair of socks, but a hat.

I attended a college orientation program for my DD and needed a potato chip knitting project for my hands to keep busy. I cast on the Seafarer's Knit Cap in the Round for the Christmas at Sea Program. The pattern is available for free on the website and also on Ravelry. The hats always knit up so nicely.

I used Lion Brand Wool Ease in the black colorway. The red is another acrylic worsted weight yarn I had just the tiniest amount of to use up. Made a perfect stripe detail. Hats I knit for donation are always made with acrylic yarn that is easy to wash and dry. The mariners who will receive these hats probably will not appreciate a 100% wool hat that needs special care.

I used a circular plastic needle that I inherited from either my grandmother or mother's knitting tool stash. I imagine it was manufactured sometime in the late 1970s or 1980s. At one time it was repaired with either glue or the strongest clear tape in the world. I can feel the tiniest of bumps on one end. It seems exactly like a thing both of them would have done to extend the life of an object. The special tools I inherited from them are not used often but I am always happy to use them when the pattern calls for the correct size.

I assume the darker sections on the needle are from age. I can only image all the wonderful items these needles have knit.
