Red Vase

Over the past year I have been experimenting with using the Cricut Maker for more than just making t shirts. My wonderful MIL loves red birds so when I saw a tutorial on jennifermaker.com to make a vase I knew exactly what gift would be making an appearance under the tree.

I love Dollar Tree!

Now, I've been finding many treasures for my classroom over the years at Dollar Tree, but I have been following other makers who are using the blanks found at Dollar Tree to create some fantastic Cricut makes.

Off I tromped to Dollar Tree. Okay, in the interest of full disclosure lots of other things besides the plain glass vase found their way into the cart. Those treasures will be discussed later in other blog posts.

How I Did It

I uploaded the free SVG into Cricut Access. Found the correct vinyl and set the Maker to work. I must admit it was nice to not have to worry about if I had mirrored the image. When using vinyl that is not heat transfer no mirroring is necessary.

The design did take about 10 minutes to cut on the machine. There were lots of intricate details. I then sat down to weed the image. Make sure you burnish the vinyl with your scraper tool before you begin to weed. There are many little cuts in the design and I'm not sure about your vinyl but mine always loves to lift off everything at once:( Just slow down and take your time.

The vinyl itself was easy to apply. I did go over the outside of the vase with an alcohol wipe before I applied anything to the vase. I lined up the bottom of the vinyl with the bottom of the vase. The original design had writing on the top of the design, but I deleted it when I uploaded the image. I knew my MIL would just like a glass vase with red birds.

It did not overlap and I am probably the only person to notice how it does not quite meet on one side of the vase. After placing the trees on the vase I then placed the red birds on various limbs.

She Loved It!

The most important point is that my MIL was thrilled with her gift. The viny is on the outside of the vase so it can be filled with water to actually hold flowers. It is not dishwasher safe and if dirty on the outside should just be wiped down with a damp cloth. I am just thrilled with how it turned out. It always warms my heart to make beautiful objects for friends and family.
