6th FO - A Lumberjack

Sherpa lined flannel is not for those with a hyper clean sewing room or who find bits of flying fluff annoying. Before Christmas Joanns had a good sale on fleece and sherpa. I wanted to try the Patterns for Pirates Lumberjack.

After I cut the fabric it looked like some kind of stuffed toy carnage in the sewing room. I read up on sewing with sherpa and the suggestion to try to trim the shepra fluff in the seam allowance is a life saver for you and your machine.

I was not enjoying the sewing process of trying the pattern at first. Nothing wrong with the pattern, the fabric was not playing nice. To increase my difficulty level I not only bought a sherpa lined flannel but it also is striped.

The stripe matching on the back yoke not even close. I also modified my original plan. The pattern comes with a stand collar option. After sewing a few seams of this fabric I realized a collar was not going to be occurring on this sew. A hood would have to be attached. A lined hood is another option included in the pattern. My hood was lined even before being cut.

The front pieces were supposed to have buttons or snaps so you could close the piece. This also was not an option with the fabric. I could have folded under the button band width and sewed it but no way was I ever going to get button holes in the fabric on my domestic machine. If I lived near a garment district where I have heard you can take coats and the like to have buttonholes installed by businesses maybe that would have happened. I just serged around all the seams to stop the fluff from flying.

They are not visible, but I installed side pockets using scraps of quilting cotton I had hanging around. If I make this pattern again I will need to attach the pockets to the inside to keep them stable. The ones I have know seem to peek out of the bottom if you put anything like a hand inside of them.

The cuffs are simple knit bands I had from another sewing project that I attached. One fits better than the other. This is totally a practice piece. I did wear it the other day when it was chilly here. It might not look the greatest but has to be one of the snuggliest things I have ever sewn. It is very warm and cuddly on a chilly day.

The pattern is well drafted and has many options. I would just think more about what fabric I would use to complete the project next time. I am pretty sure this will be the only sherpa lined flannel project I will ever create.
