Fleece Hats

For years I have been sewing fleece hats for my students for their holiday gift. Everybody can always use a hat during the winter. They are a non-Christmasy gift so all students can accept them. I do not wrap the hats. I pair them with a book (I save up my points from Scholastic Book Clubs to buy the books for free).

I have been using the same fleece for quite a few years. This past year when I went to buy the fleece I found it was discontinued. Off to find a suitable substitute. Our school mascot is a Timber wolf so I always look for a pawprint. I have learned my lesson and I bought the entire bolt this year. This should take me through retirement on the hat making (The plan is to retire in 2 years).

It is a simple pattern of a triangle and then I just add a white fleece border. I serge the entire hat. Fleece makes it very suitable for small children. It is warm and most importantly machine washable and dryable.

I have 20 ready to gift. My class at the current moment only has 17 students, but I always like to make a few extras in case I receive a last minute addition to my classroom right before the holiday.

For about 90% of my students it is the first handmade item they have ever received. It is so sweet to see former students come back for a visit and they still talk about the hat I made them. Parents also almost always mention the hat when I run into them in later years.
