Reading for the Week

With a long weekend I had extra reading time. I made Goodreads happy that I have not completely fallen behind on my challenge yet this year. The Longbourn book was finished and returned to the library. I had a few kindle books I had borrowed through my library's website which were also quickly approaching a return date.

Kindle Ebooks

Northern Spy by Flynn Berry. Luckily, this was a short book because I must say it was not a favorite. It is about a women who seems to have a lot of initials after her name and not in a good way. Initials like OCD, PTSD, not Ph.D., M.D., J.D. The book setting is Ireland within the last few years. I realize it is a work of fiction but it should have some basic facts correct and frankly I'm not sure it does.

The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon. Sometimes I think I might need better book recommendations from websites. This was a psychological thriller. I am not too big on this type of book. I keep trying them but no love of the genre discovered yet. Plot of the book involves sisters, "hidden" family history (is there ever any other in this type of book), and spooky events. The ending was very abrupt and I was unprepared for the epilogue.

Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead. This is a 'biggun at over 600 pages. I am only about 6% of the way through the book. It is holding my attention. A lot has already happened in just the first few pages. The book wanders between time (1930s and 2000s) and character perspectives. In the beginning the perspective of the character from the 1930s is told in the 3rd person, not first person. This character has yet to begin "speaking" in the first person so it will be interesting if that even occurs.

Prague Winter: A Personal Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 by Madeline Albright. I am now at 20% in this book. Hilter has risen to power in Germany and we all knw that does not go well.

The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd. I am over halfway through the book. She has married Jesus, bore a child (who did not survive), begun to see Jesus on what would be his ministry and escaped to Egypt. Note to self, if ever transported back in time do not anger the ruler in charge of your city or you will have to flee for your life.

Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard. I am no further along in this book. It might take me as long to finish this book as it did poor President Garfield to die after his doctors got ahold of him.
