Spooky Halloween Dress
I saw this fabric all over my social media feeds last year. But by the time I got to Joanns I could not locate any. A few months later I was wandering around the store looking for something else and lo and behold guess what I saw in a clearance rack. It went straight into my cart (and then I had to wait FOREVER to get it measured and cut - a typical occurrance at Joanns and just one of the major reasons I try to avoid the store if at all possible).
It is a stable knit and it glows in the dark. As an aside I did not have quite enough for my vision. I knew I had seen it this season on social media but in a cotton, not a knit. I took a chance and stopped by and they had it at my store only in knit, not cotton. The sales person made it seems like they stocked this fabric all the time? Anywoo.
I had a vision. Since sewing a few Ellie & Mac Diana dresses and not having to fiddle with neckbands I knew I want to start with that as my base. I did not want tiers on this dress. Ellie & Mac then recently released the Lakeisha Dress. This pattern has a few skirt options. I selected the flare option with ruffle.
With my ideas in place I began my monster mash dress. I cut the bodice and sleeves from the Diana. The skirt from the Lakeisha. They matched up perfectly since it was the same dress company. One of the hardest parts was all the gathering on the ruffle.
Since it is just starting to turn a little chilly here I went with 3/4 length sleeves from the Diana pattern.
For the lining I used a white cotton lyrca I had purchased for another project. i still have enough left for that project I believe. At the time I cut the bodice I knew I did not have enough to make it using the same fabric. It turns out I like the white lining.
I put a lettuce hem on the edge of the ruffle. That is a lot of ruffle I must say.
I am very pleased with my Monster Mash dress. I have the perfect pair of mummy earrings to wear with it.
