What Am I Reading This Week
I love to read - my mother was a librarian. She also loved to read. I track my books on Goodreads (you can follow me, my username is nypeapod). I usually am reading 2 books at the same time. One is a physical and/or Kindle book and the other is an audio book.
I listen to audio books in the car mostly, but also always have one loaded on my ipod to listen to while knitting. Especially since the pandemic, no one really wants to listen to the news on the car radio any longer. When driving with my daughter we do listen to music.
These are my current selections:
Physical book:
Longbourn by Jo Baker. If you like Jane Austen you may or may not enjoy this book. It is a retelling of Pride and Prejudice (a light retelling) but from the perspective of a housemaid in the Bennet household. Honestly, when you read the descriptions of the household work the servants performed you become exhausted.
Kindle ebook:
Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 by Madeline K. Albright (yes, the former Secretary of State). This book is about Czechoslovakia, her native homeland. Currently I am only about 5% of the way through the book. (I love this feature of a Kindle to tell you how far along you are in a book). The book is interesting. The book contains a background in Czechoslovakian history.
Car Audio Book:
The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd. The main character in the book is Ana, who is married to Jesus. When Jesus is introduced in the book he is approximately 18 years old and his father, Joseph has recently died. The book itself is really much more about a woman who lived in a time and culture that really wanted nothing more than to suppress her thoughts and ideas. She just happens to be married to Jesus. (Isn't that a strange sentence to write, oh, and yeah she just happened to be married to Son of God). I have listened to about 38% of the book.
Ipod Audio:
Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard. James Garfield, when he is remembered, it is only as the 2nd US president assassinated. He served less than 6 months in office. The book also contains quite a bit of information about Alexander Graham Bell. Currently, I have listened to approximately 50% of the book.
