Diana Pattern - Dress and Top
Ellie & Mac pattern company released a new pattern more than a month ago. I believe this is the fastest I have ever sewn up a new pattern purchase. The newest pattern is the Diana. It is drafted for knit fabrics. There are lots of options in the pattern - 3 different necklines, different lengths and different sleeves. I do love a pattern with many options. You can make many versions of the same pattern and only you know you have used the same pattern 5 times.
I wanted to make a dress version first. Of course the dress version has pockets! I purchased the nicest, softest rib knit from Hobby Lobby. In fact after finishing and wearing the dress I went back and got more of the same rib knit. It will make a fantastic pair of pajamas.
I wanted to do a scoop neck version. Another bonus for the pattern no neckline bindings. The bodice is lined. Below is a picture of the completed bodice.
I understitched the lining. This is always a great finishing touch and it often keeps a lining from trying to creep into view while wearing. I also added the puff sleeve version to the dress. Only added 2 layers to the bodice to make it a midi length.
You do need to add the clear elastic on each layer. The weight of the material will pull down the dress in weird ways without it. The dress is super comfortable. I have already worn it to work and it fits perfectly.
After the success of the dress I wanted to try another neckline version. I used the small piece of knit I had from Mily Mae Fabrics to make a square neckline top of the same pattern.
It is always so interesting to me how different fabrics will interact with the same pattern. The same sized pattern piece was used but the bodice on this version feels tighter. The square neckline was easier than I thought and turned out quite nice. My next version is already planned and fabric has been purchased. Another rib knit and I believe I will try a different sleeve version.
