Making Your Own Spice Mixes
Well you can actually make many of your own mixes, but I tend to only use 3 "spice" mixes that I make in bulk. I made a bisquick type mix years ago, I then realized that I rarely use bisquick so after it was used up I never made it again. Over the years I have also made pancake mix and brownie mixes. Both of those were great, especially the pancake mix. I would make up the mixes and portion them into vacuum sealer bags. The pancake mix bags were a hit especially when we were camping, so easy to pack and prepare at the campsite. The brownie mix was perfect when someone in the house had a hankering for brownies. Easy to open the mix and make them to order.
Why make your own?
I like to control the spice level of certain premade mixes. Controlling the ingredients and using organic dried spices is also important to me. I can also control the sodium and sweetener levels in the mixes. Portion control can also be a factor. Like a more ranchy tasting ranch dressing, add more of your spice mix.
Cost can also be a factor. The little packets of ranch mix or onion soup mix you purchase in the store can really add up. There is an investment in the spices, but none of these mixes contain exotic ingredients. I have all the required ingredients already lurking in my spice/baking cupboard. I can put the mix together for pennies on the dollar.
Storage
I make the spice mixes and store them in small mason jars that I have labeled with the directions for their use as a dressing. Ironically, I never use them as actually dressing mixes, but I sure do use them in many other foods. Your storage container should have a tight fitting lid. I prefer glass jars for storage as they are easy to clean, easy to see the contents and no leaching of plastic chemicals into the food.
My Top Three Favorites
- Ranch Dressing We mostly use this as a vegetable dip. Some meals instead of a salad just put out a plate of fresh cut vegetables with this dip. In my house we refer to this as "restaurant quality." We had dinner guests many years ago and I put out a plate of nibbles. One of the guest declared it was the best dip they had ever eaten, "This is restaurant quality." It has been known by this title ever since. I simply mix it with sour cream to make the dip.
- Onion Soup Mix I use this in any recipe that calls for onion soup mix. I also can make this an easy dip with either sour cream or yogurt.
- Taco Seasoning Again this is used in any recipe that calls for taco seasoning.
Try a mix, you will be surprised how easy they are to actually make and use.
