New Jelly Flavor

Earlier I wrote about the freezer clean up I did. Found lots of frozen fruit so decided to steam juice it. I did not have enough juice when the chore was completed for a batch of any one single flavor. I began playing with ideas about mixing flavors.

At one point I know the juice company Ocean Spray had a cran-strawberry flavor. I believe I tried it at some point and was not too bad. IT is a lovely red color and will be perfect in a Christmas gift basket. This will work as a jelly, not sure if it would work as a jam due to texture issues.

One of the reasons making your own preserves is nice is that you control the ingredients. The ingredients list is very short and pectin is the only slightly processed item (well except for the sugar) involved.

You can make jam from frozen fruit but I find the fruit mushy in the jam. Therefore, I just steam juice all the frozen fruit I find in the depths of my freezer. I think it makes a nicer looking and tastier end product.
